Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy (1932–2009) was the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, having represented the Commonwealth in Washington for 46 years. He was elected to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960. At the time of his death, Senator Kennedy was the second-most senior member of the Senate, after President pro tempore of the United States Senate Robert Byrd of West Virginia.
Senator Kennedy was the senior Democrat on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in the Senate. He also served on the Judiciary Committee, where he was the senior Democrat on the Immigration Subcommittee, and on the Armed Services Committee, where he was the senior Democrat on the Seapower Subcommittee. He was a member of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee and the Congressional Friends of Ireland, and a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
Ted Kennedy received a BS from Harvard University in 1956 and attended the International Law School, The Hague, in 1958. He received an LLB from the University of Virginia in 1959. Senator Kennedy was a staunch advocate for his constituents and one of the most influential and enduring icons of his party.
